Academic or student

Academic writing at every level is much more technical than writing for yourself. There are rules you have to follow, a certain style you have to abide by, and each institution will have different ideas of what is acceptable and what is not. Before we even start, I’ll go through all that with you—do you follow the Harvard referencing system, or the Chicago one, or perhaps a different one altogether? What are your institution’s layout requirements? How do you feel about the Oxford comma?

I’ve worked with students and academic writers from all over the world, and I’ve helped them with undergraduate papers, Master’s dissertations, and Ph.D. theses. I’ve worked mainly within humanities but I have also helped students in the sciences. I may not understand all the technical jargon in your paper, but I will still understand the sentence structure and the grammar behind it. If I don’t understand, I’ll ask, but if I don’t understand it, it’s probably better to alter it anyway.

Please note, I won’t write your paper for you, and I won’t create any original material. What I will do, is give you feedback on structure, I’ll help you with your grammar and layout, I might point out moments of confusions or well-written sentences, and I’ll check your references.

These are the services I offer to my academic clients:

Paper Review / Feedback

Do you want someone to read through your work and give you a little feedback? I’m not claiming to be a tutor, or even particularly knowledgeable in most subjects. What I can do is provide feedback on the clarity of your argument, for example, or on paragraphs that are confusing and vague. This doesn’t include any actual editing (although I may highlight the odd typo, out of sheer habit).

Copy-editing involves taking your paper sentence-by-sentence, word-by-word even, and giving it a good scrub. It’s about looking at consistency, syntax, sentence structure, and readability. We’ll look at grammar, punctuation, flow, and accuracy, as well as rooting out typos and errors. We’ll develop a working relationship, in which we’ll work closely together to ensure your paper is the best it can possibly be, without overstepping academic boundaries of plagiarism or collusion. All changes will be tracked using MS Word’s ‘track changes’ feature, so you can see any alterations I’ve made and make the final decision.

Proofreading should be the final stage of your paper, after all the writing, redrafting, argument developing, editing, and rewording is done. It’s a last check for errors, typos, and misprints. In some ways, this is the most difficult form of editing because it requires a huge attention to detail and focus, yet it will involve the least amount of changes—if any at all—because they should have been picked up in a previous round of edits (although we all know that typos breed when we aren’t looking, so there’s bound to be one or two).
